Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve covers the central and eastern areas of the Okavango Delta. It holds the distinction of being the first wildlife sanctuary in Africa created by local residents. Proclaimed in 1963 by the BaTawana tribe, this pristine reserve protects dual ecosystems, combining permanent wetlands and rivers with dry acacia woodlands and savannahs.

Key Wildlife

Moremi is universally recognized as one of the best game viewing areas in Africa, boasting an incredible abundance of big game year-round.

  • The Big Five: A vital stronghold for Black and White Rhinos on Chief's Island, alongside Elephants, Buffaloes, Lions, and Leopards.
  • Carnivore Haven: Famous for high-density predator interactions, particularly massive Lion prides and packs of African Wild Dogs.
  • Avian Hotspot: Exceptional birdwatching options along the lagoons, featuring Sacred Ibises, Malachite Kingfishers, and Wattled Cranes.

Access Gates & Controls

Overland access into Moremi requires a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle equipped with a snorkel for deep water crossings.

  • South Gate (Maqwee): Located 90km north of Maun, the main entry point leading into the dry mopane tongue forests.
  • North Gate (Khwai): A rustic log bridge entrance providing access over the Khwai River from the adjacent community areas.
  • Park Regulations: Day visitors must clear the park gates before sunset. Self-drive entry requires pre-booked park permits.

Infrastructure Network

The interior transit grid is a mix of dynamic water channels, deep sand tracks, and seasonal log bridge river crossings.

  • Core Hubs: The Xakanaxa and Third Bridge areas offer public, completely unfenced wilderness camping sites.
  • Deep-Park Lodges: Exclusive luxury operations positioned on private concession islands inside the park boundaries, such as Mombo and Chief's Camp.
  • Bridges: Adventurous log structures (First to Fourth Bridge) require careful 4x4 navigation during high-water seasons.

Pro Tip

Always check water levels at South Gate or with local guides before attempting to cross Third Bridge. During peak flood seasons (June–August), water depth can exceed vehicle hoods, requiring alternative routing through the mopane fields.
